Wondering if your drug-free
workplace is still cost-effective? Here are three reasons
why it makes especially good sense to be drug free now. |
| 1.
Workers' compensation premiums
are increasing at double digit rates. |
| 2.
Healthcare costs are rising
even faster. |
| 3. Being drug free is a
competitive necessity. |

Rising Workers' Compansation
Premiums |
| |
Workers’ compensation insurance companies
are experiencing some very tough times. Which
means you’re going to feel the pain.
In 2000, workers' compensation premiums increased
an estimated 12 percent. That was just the beginning.
In the second quarter of 2002, one-third of
companies experienced rate increases of 20 to
30 percent, according to the Council of Insurance
Agents and Brokers. Another 15 percent of companies
saw their premiums rise by 30 to 50 percent.
Don’t expect trends to change anytime
soon. So, if you’re currently getting
a discount under a state program, maybe you
should keep it. Even if you're not, DFWP programs
can reduce claims, which can hold down future
premium hikes.

Increasing Healthcare
Costs |

Are your healthcare premiums skyrocketing?
Join the club.
The 2000 Dun & Bradstreet Small Business
Survey found that the number one problem faced
by small businesses was rising healthcare costs.
And that was before the latest rounds of rate
increases.
In May 2002, The Council of Insurance Agents
and Brokers said that over three-quarters of
mid-sized businesses had premium hikes of 10
to 30 percent during the previous six months;
another 20 percent saw their premiums rise by
30 to 50 percent. Hewitt Associates predicts
average HMO rate increases of over 20 percent
in 2003.
It’s no secret that employees who abuse
drugs and alcohol use more medical services.
Keep substance abuse out of your workplace to
keep your group health premiums down. |
| |
Competitive Necessity |
| |
It’s a fact: people who use illegal
drugs seek out companies that are not drug free.
The number of drug-free businesses is increasing.
Virtually all of the Fortune 500 companies drug
test. Thousands of smaller employers now participate
in state certification programs to take advantage
of insurance discounts and legal protections.
Employees accept and even expect their workplaces
to be drug free.
Don’t become the workplace of choice
for drug abusers. Continue to protect your company
and employees from the costs and risks of substance
abuse. |
